Antarctica: Elephant Island

Recorded February 20, 2009.

Elephant Island is an ice-covered, mountainous island off the coast of Antarctica in the outer reaches of the South Shetland Islands in the Southern Ocean. Its name was given by early explorers sighting elephant seals on its shores. It lies 779 miles west-southwest of South Georgia, 581 miles south of the Falkland Islands, and 550 miles southeast of Cape Horn. It is within the Antarctic claims of Argentina, Chile and the UK.

The video begins as we approach Elephant Island on the Star Princess. We then sail around the mountains and glaciers on the island. We also see a whale. It is kind of hard to spot on the video, but if you look close you can spot the spray from its blow hole. We also see some penguins in the water.
