Cob on Wood

Essential Food and Medicine, Natural Builder Miguel Elliot of Living Earth Structures, and Artists Building Communities worked together with residents of the West Oakland Wood Street housing encampment to build a kitchen, community health clinic, bathroom, shower, and free store. These earthen structures serve the residents and volunteers of the encampment so they can safely and comfortably prepare meals, gather in the gardens for communal dinners, seek health advise from holistic healers and medical professionals, and take what they need from the free store.

There are nearly 150 residents of the Wood St. Encampment in Oakland that are in danger of being evicted by Cal Trans in May 2021, and the Cob on Wood community space is in danger of being demolished. This eviction would uproot people who have made Wood St their home for years sending them back out onto the streets and scrambling to find places to park their motor homes.
