Thousands of Russians took to the streets to decry the invasion of Ukraine as emotional calls for protests grew on social media.

The closure of the popular social media platforms in Russia has created difficulties for activists to plan or discuss a protest.

The country first banned Facebook in retaliation for Meta’s decision to ban Russian media and remove Ukraine's disinformation network from its social media platform. It has now banned Meta’s other social media app Instagram after the company made some changes to its hate speech policy.
