Spot Fake Reviews on Google - How to find a Good Contractor

Google is a powerful tool for finding service businesses. However, not all contractors are legit. In fact, many are paying for reviews just so you can hire them and then they'll deliver lousy service at extremely high prices.

Check for Extreme Language
One of the telltale signs of a fake review is the use of overly positive language. Fake reviews often go to extremes. Genuine reviews tend to be more balanced and specific.

Look at the Reviewer's Profile
Examining the reviewer's profile can provide clues about the authenticity of a review. Fake reviewers often have 'hidden' google review profiles. That's so you can't see what they've reviewed when they've reviewed 100 of the same type of business. Genuine reviewers have a history of consistent reviews that are relevant to their location.

Assess the Timing of Reviews
Reviews are hard to get! If a business suddenly receives a large number of positive reviews within a short period, it's likely a sign of fake reviews. Anything local service business getting over 4-5 reviews a week is suspect.

Check for Verified Reviews
Google sometimes marks reviews as “verified” if the reviewer is known to have visited the business. While not foolproof, verified reviews are generally more reliable than unverified ones. If a review is verified, it’s more likely to be genuine.
