Maynard Ferguson at The 1982 Playboy Jazz Festival
Here is higher definition version of our complete set at The Playboy Jazz Festival in 1982. What an AMAZING thrill ride for this young man from Hattiesburg :) Just have a look at who was on the bill with us:
THE GREAT QUARTET (TYNER, CARTER, JONES, HUBBARD)
WILLIE BOBO, RED NORVO / TAL FARLOW TRIO, BENNY GOLSON, ART FARMER, NANCY WILSON, PIECES OF A DREAM
GROVER WASHINGTON JUNIOR,MAYNARD FERGUSON & HIS ORCHESTRA, LIONEL HAMPTON'S ALLSTAR JAM SESSION,
FREE FLIGHT, DAVE BRUBECK QUINTET, WILD BILL DAVISON
ORNETTE COLEMAN & PRIME TIME, WEATHER REPORT
MANHATTAN TRANSFER, DEXTER GORDON, WOODY SHAW
MILT JACKSON, OC SMITH and SARAH VAUGHN!!!!!!!!!
Are you KIDDING me? Plus, to be in the Hollywood bowl along with Mr. Hefner and his Rabbits (what WHAT?) Man, it was an all-star FREAK OUT for me and a HECK of a way to get introduced to the world.
The three selections came from a studio album, that Maynard made without his road band, only studio heavies called "Hollywood". That decision BTW, led to his leaving Columbia. Maynard asked us all to come up with expanded versions of the album charts that we could play on the road. THAT was quite an education! Using the original scores, Chris Braymen, Denis DiBlasio and myself converted the pieces and adapted them to what we were doing. BIG fun! Here's who did what:
1. "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" adapted by Denis DiBlasio
2. Portuguese Love" adapted by Steve Wiest
3. "Hollywood" (at the end as a bonus after the credits) adapted by Chris Braymen.
Enjoy!
