My 2020/21 Champions League Predictions | Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea & Man City

The Champions League season kicks off next tuesday, here are my predictions for the 2020/21 UCL season.

First we’ll start with the dark horses, Lazio. In the first few seasons under Inzaghi, Lazio were known for being an excellent counter attacking side. They would press you in a swinging motion with the outside centre midfielder joining the two strikers to press. Often winning the ball high and breaking in behind with Immobile and Caicedo. But now, they are the full package. In possession, they are now comfortable at controlling possession deep with Luis Alberto dictating, allowing Milinkovic-Savic to join the attack and add height and physicality to the forward line.

Borussia Dortmund are fancied at around the 13th favourites to win the competition, I expect them to go much further than the Last 16 - making them my overachievers.They’ve got the two best under 21 talents in the world in Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland, along with some of the brightest youth talents in Reyna, Bellingham, Reiner and 15 year old Youssoufa Moukoko, who’s scored 134 goals at youth level since the start of the 17/18 season but is currently ineligible to play in the Bundesliga until the end of December because he’s too young. Along with the potential in their side, Lucien Favre is evolving tactically, taking the Nagelsmann approach and deploying Dortmund in a 3-4-3, 3-4-1-2 and a 3-5-2. I really think Dortmund will overachieve massively and could even go as far as the semis

Moving onto the English sides, I expect Liverpool to go the furthest, most likely to the Semis, then both Manchester clubs to exit around the quarters with Chelsea going out in the last 16. I think Chelsea will have a fantastic side in the next couple of years but this is a transition year for them. For me, they’ve not strengthened enough defensively and Lampard is still figuring out how to get the best out of his star signings Kai Havertz and Timo Werner and then what that means for last season’s star performers, like Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount. And that’s before Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic return to fitness!
I think Chelsea have a fantastic selection in attack but their young forward line, who will be prone to the inconsistency of youth, defensive frailties and potentially Lampard’s inexperience will hold them back.

Finally with Man United, Man Utd meanwhile are the bookies favourites to go out early but I think their form will start to pick up now that their players have got a few games under their belts. Last time, United played PSG. They undressed them in Paris, shocking the football world and Ole’s Manchester United actually suit playing against tougher opposition. Against the Premier League “Top 6” last season, Manchester United lost just twice in 10 games, picking up 18 points against the supposedly best sides in the country.

Tactically, I expect we will see a 3-4-1-2 and 4-4-2 diamond in europe. This will either allow for an extra defender or what we all want a midfield of Matic, Bruno, Pogba and Donny. This big game shape will not only allow Ole to fit in all of his best players into one side. But allow him to play with split strikers. A tactic devastating against attacking full backs which most top level sides have at their disposal.
