Title ‘Swatantryaveer’ not conferred by government on Savarkar, grandnephew tells court
The defamation complaint alleges that Mr. Gandhi made statements against Savarkar on multiple occasions, including a speech on March 5, 2023, at the Overseas Congress event in the United Kingdom.Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Vinayak Savarkar and complainant in a criminal defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, testified before a special MP/MLA court in Pune that the title ‘Swatantryaveer’ was not granted to Savarkar by any government. He said the title was given by writer Sadashiv Ranade in a biography.Satyaki Savarkar, who is being cross-examined by Mr. Gandhi’s counsel Milind Pawar, made the statement on Wednesday (April 8, 2026) before Special Judge Amol Shinde. The cross-examination is part of a defamation complaint filed by Satyaki against Mr. Gandhi over remarks the Congress leader made about SavarkarDuring his testimony, Mr. Satyaki told the court: “It is true to say that ‘Swatantryaveer’ title is not granted by Government to Savarkar. It is not true to say that the title of Swatantryaveer was not bestowed upon him by the people.”He added that he did not possess any document to show that the public had conferred the title on Savarkar. “It is true to say that the title of Swatantryaveer is given to Savarkar in the biography written by Sadashiv Ranade. I do not know whether the title given to Savarkar by Ranade was his imagination,” Mr. Satyaki stated.

Mr. Satyaki also accepted that Savarkar went to London for studies during British rule and lived there for four years. He agreed that Savarkar wrote several books and articles during that period, and that some of these works were published under other names to avoid attention from British authorities.“It is true to say that many of the books written by Savarkar were published under the name of different authors. It is true to say that many books and other writings written by Savarkar are available in the London Libraries and Archives. It is true to say that Savarkar’s writings were secretly published under someone else’s name, avoiding the attention of the British,” Mr. Satyaki testified.He further stated that several books written by Savarkar – some published in the names of other authors – are available in India and London and are being studied by students and historians. However, he accepted that he could not tell what these books contain. “It is true to say that I cannot tell how many books there are, what kind they are, or how many of them there are. I am a writer but not a historian. It is true to say that I am not aware of what writers, historians and students in London have written about Savarkar,” he said.

The defamation complaint alleges that Mr. Gandhi made statements against Savarkar on multiple occasions, including a speech on March 5, 2023, at the Overseas Congress event in the United Kingdom. Mr. Satyaki has claimed that Mr. Gandhi accused Savarkar of writing a book in which he described beating up a Muslim person — an assertion Satyaki says is false, and that no such incident occurred. The complainant has submitted news reports and a YouTube link of Mr. Gandhi’s speech as evidence.

Mr. Satyaki has sought punishment for Mr. Gandhi under Section 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code and compensation under Section 357 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The cross-examination will continue on April 13.
