Here's the video transcript:
Here's a great intro, especially for rock guitarists playing electric guitar, but no reason not to play it on acoustic if you like.

This is the basis of the lead intro part that Francis Rossi plays - although it's the lead part, I would say that for most beginners it is easier to play than the underlying rhythm part. Here's what we'll cover in this lesson. OK let's take it one riff at a time.

Start with your third finger on the third fret on the G string and play these three notes using third second and then 3rd finger again as you move down to the D string. For this riff the same three notes are played twice, but with a shift of accent like this.

Notice I use a little vibrato technique the second time I arrive at this note on the second fret to help emphasize it.

Now, Frances Rossi normally plays this about eight times through during the 'warm-up' part of the intro and then we are into the 12 Bar sequence which means that he keeps playing the same riff over four bars of F. Then as the underlying chord shifts to Bb he changes just one note of the riff to suit the change the rhythm of the riff stays exactly the same so you keep accenting the second note using the vibrato. After playing through that Bb riff twice it's back to the F riff for two bars. Then over a change to a C chord we play this riff that starts with a fast hammer-on/pull-off from the second fret on the G string to the third like this...just bouncing that third finger off the string at the third fret then to the note at the first fret on the B string then back down the third string, fingering three, two, open like this then back to the note at fret 2 on the G string for a brief pause.

That's probably the trickiest bit of the whole intro so probably a good idea just to pause the video a minute and work on what we have covered so far.

Ok, here's the last bit.Two hits on the note at fret 2 on the G string then straight to three hits on the same string at fret 1 then open on the 3rd string followed by fret 3 on the fourth string . Hit once to complete the phrase and then a couple more times like this then finish with a repeat of the first riff for a couple of bars.

Here's the whole thing played through nice and slow...And more or less at full tempo. I'll tab that out for you and include a printout of that with this video. Have fun!
