German conservative leader Merz fails to secure chancellor majority

German conservative leader Friedrich Merz failed to secure a parliamentary majority to become chancellor on Tuesday, delivering an unexpected blow to his newly formed coalition with the centre-left Social Democrats. Despite his CDU-CSU bloc winning the most votes in February’s national elections with 28.5%, the result fell short of the majority required in the Bundestag. Merz had entered into a coalition with the Social Democrats, who garnered only 16.4%—their worst performance in Germany’s post-war history. The Bundestag now has 14 days to elect Merz or nominate an alternative candidate for chancellor through an outright majority vote.
