Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - 1080p AI Remaster Comparison

A preview of early experiments to remaster Star Trek: Starfleet Academy - a 1997 PC Space Combat Simulator/FMV Adventure game.

The question always gets asked when I post these FMV game remasters, so I'll get ahead of it: yes, there is work underway to get these remastered videos working in-game. I'm working with a talented programmer who is modifying the game code to play back modern video formats. I have no doubt I'll post an announcement as and when patches/updates/releases are available.

The source videos used here are from the rare DVD-ROM edition of the game. Unfortunately, Interplay decided not to use DVD video for the FMV (probably due to hardware limitations of most computers at the time) and stuck with the MVE format. The result was that the DVD-ROM version had slightly higher resolution video, but still a lot in the way of image compression. Bizarrely, the video files were encoded at 30fps but the footage itself was only 15fps - hence the jerky motion of the source footage. Here, I've used RIFE AI to increase the frame rate to genuine 30fps and Topaz Video Enhance AI to increase the resolution from 360p to 1080p HD.
