Language finds a way | Hannah Little | TEDxNewcastleCollege

What can science fiction teach us about the origins of human language? In this talk, Hannah will take us on a quick comedic tour of how humans might go about solving the seemingly impossible task of communicating with aliens, and what this sci-fi themed thought experiment can tell us about how language may have originally come about in our ancestors. Considering this “language grounding” problem not only shines light on human origins, but also poses one of the most difficult problems for artificial intelligence. How can we communicate without any pre-existing communication system, conventions or shared knowledge? I am a senior lecturer in Science Communication. I teach at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels on topics including digital communication, public speaking, and research methods. I also teach on science in public spaces, including comedy, games and citizen science.

At the level of research, my main interests are the use of methods from cultural evolution to look at how scientific information is transmitted online, in the lab, and in the real world. Current research projects are looking at escape rooms, twitter and science comedy. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
