The engine had just rolled back into the station after a brush fire call on the edge of town where dry grass and wind kept the crew moving for nearly an hour. Ryan Martin steps away from the truck still covered in dust and ash, his yellow turnout pants streaked from kneeling in the dirt while running hose lines. The late afternoon sun hits the side of the fire engine as he sits down on the metal step to finally catch his breath. His hands rest on his knees while the adrenaline slowly fades and the station yard grows quiet again. Inside the truck the equipment is already being reset for the next call. In a few minutes the tones could drop again and this short pause will be over.
