Jennifer Ballantine on the 2022 #GibChess Battle of the Sexes and the Garrison Library

Dr Jennifer Ballantine, director of Gibraltar's Garrison Library, looks back at the 200+ year history of the library from the time of the Great Siege (1789-1793). The library collection was established in 1793 for the benefit of the British officers who were garrisoned in Gibraltar during this time. It contains many valuable historical works which are sought out by researchers, plus back numbers of the Gibraltar Chronicle newspaper dating back to its foundation in 1801. The Garrison Library was a private subscription library for commissioned officers only and effectively became a gentlemen's club.

The library is now open to the public on a daily basis. Dr Ballantine and the Garrison Library have also been delighted to host this wonderful event to underline that fact and that the Garrison Library is now open to all, soldiers and civilians, gentlemen and ladies!
