An Easy-to-Make Lightweight Tree and Plant Pruner

This video shows how to make yourself a lightweight long-handle pruner. It is intended to prune vines, creepers and ivies and new growth on trees which are out of reach and avoid the use of steps or ladders. It is not a replacement for the many extendable rope or lever pruners. It won't cut thick branches or hard stems. I use to control climbers on my garden fence that are difficult to reach because of other shrubs and trees are in the way. It will also cut new growth on trees as the video demonstrates. I use it weekly while the stems are soft and easily cut. It was very easy to make. The only tools were a junior hacksaw, pliers and a screwdriver. The cigar cutter is available on ebay (£4.69 from China). The blades' parrot-bill shape grip the stem and cut in one easy action. The whole tool weighs only 460g - less than a third of my telescopic pruner. I chose the length so it will reach across my shrub bed without stretching. It could be made any length to suit your garden needs. It would be idea where a climber is out of reach and out of control on a house wall; cutting the lead shoots each week would limit its height without the use and danger of ladders. You may notice that the action looks a little stiff and jerky. This is due to friction between the slider and cane. This is just a prototype to test out if the idea would work. Replacing the bamboo with a suitable plastic or aluminium rod would make the action a lot smoother. All except the cigar cutter were scrap-box parts so the whole tool cost me less than £5 to make.
