Hi and welcome to our mattress topper guide. My name is Ryan and I'm the founder of John Ryan by Design the UK's premier independent mattress retailer. We recommend that all of our customers use mattress toppers this may at first seem strange when he's spending a significant sum on a mattress why would you need to buy a separate mattress topper? There's a vast array of mattress toppers available that can be used in many ways that we're going to delve into in a moment.

A key feature of a topper is that when combined with a mattress protector it will keep your mattress like new for much longer. It can even double the life expectancy of a decent mattress. This is because the topper combined with the protector will keep your mattress safe from moisture
and daily wear and tear.

So which type topper is right for you? Well if you haven't bought your mattress yet that we would advise waiting until you've had it delivered before making this decision. I like to use the analogy of buying a new pair of walking boots you shouldn't buy the socks really before you tried to boots on!

Okay, so you have your mattress let's look at some different scenarios. Your mattress is brand new and it's a little firm this is actually quite common my mattress is brand new they're a little firmer the first 6 to
12 months than the eventual firmness. In this case, could go for a deep topper to soften the top layers. Examples would be a feather, down, wool or microfiber.
What about if you have your mattress and it's just right? Well, in this case, we've got a simple quilted mattress topper so you can enjoy your new mattress whilst also protecting it.

What about if your mattress is old and too firm in this case something a bit more substantial would be good a resilient latex topper would be a good solution. More expensive but could breathe new life into an old mattress.

Something worth noting is that you should be looking to get a topper that is complementary to your mattress. If you have spent money on a natural fibre mattress then you don't want to suffocate the fantastic properties by using a synthetic mattress topper. Try and match your existing mattress fibres.

One final thought is on memory foam toppers. They're cheap widely available and often sold as a solution for an uncomfortable mattress. Unfortunately, I have nothing good to say about memory foam toppers they are heat retentive and usually collapse within a year. Please avoid them as there are so many better sometimes cheaper and natural alternatives available.
