The Strand New Cycle Path - Major Liverpool Road Rebuild

Phase one of The Strand rebuild has just been finished in October 2021. The multi-million pound scheme has removed motor traffic lanes from a major route through Liverpool city centre. Junctions have been removed and new public space has been created. A new cycle path has also opened, forming a vital link for cycling between north and south of the city. New trees have also been planted and the work has been finished to a high standard.

In the video I start near the Albert Dock and head north, then turn around and come back south.

Some details of the cycle path could be better, such as the high vertical kerbs. At the north end, it finishes 800m short of the excellent cycle path on Regent Road. But in general this is a big improvement to what was a dirty and polluted traffic sewer. The space has been opened up to people not in cars.

Phase two of the scheme will extend the cycle path south to the junction with Liver Street, where it will meet with existing cycle paths on Park Lane. This work is due to start in 2022. For now a stretch of temporary cycle path has been painted on the wide pedestrian area.
