1973 Mustang Mach 1 vs. 2016 Mustang GT | Driver Battles: Drag Edition

Who’s faster down the strip? Driver Battles: Drag Edition is back for another episode at Irwindale Dragstrip, this time, it's a battle of old vs new drag racing with a ‘73 Mach 1 Mustang going head to head with modern muscle in a 2016 Mustang GT. Can an old V8 powerplant really stand toe-to-toe with the technological marvel that is the modern muscle car engine?

Driving the Mach 1, in this battle of old-school V8 versus high-tech muscle, is Greg Friend. While his Mustang came with 300hp from the factory, it’s seen a few upgrades. The 351ci Cleveland engine has been upgraded with an Edelbrock single plane aluminum intake manifold, a Holley 750 cfm carburetor, a Thundermaker camshaft and Crane roller-rockers, along with many other modifications to both the engine and rest of the car.

In the 2016 Mustang GT, we have Mike Garret in the driver’s seat, and while he hasn’t made many modifications, you could also say that he doesn’t really need as much help with a current output of 435hp and 400 lb-ft of torque!

While both cars are up for the fight, we know it all comes down to Driver Battles. Who will take home the 1/8th-mile glory?
