The ultimate line -- a journey into pride, pain, and purpose | John McCalla-Leacy | TEDxWanChai
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
John McCalla-Leacy gives the talk of his life on his experiences tackling the waves and obstacles as a former Olympic canoe slalomist. Drawing comparison to the sport, John explains how every aspect of life can throw similar obstacles at us, and how we can learn from athletes to overcome these obstacles.
Born to first-generation Jamaican-British parents in a working class neighbourhood in London, John began his professional life as a White Water Canoeist competing for Great Britain. Subsequently, he went on to compete in martial arts, winning two British titles and one European title.
After a successful career as a martial arts champion, John showcased the versatility, flexibility and tenacity honed during his days as a professional athlete: he became a knitwear designer, managed a chain of fashion retail outlets for the United Colors of Benetton, ran his own fashion & design consultancy, worked as a stock broker, opened a nightclub in Thailand and became a successful real-estate developer in the UK.
John eventually moved to Hong Kong, where he is currently the APAC Regional Head of the Centre of Excellence for Corporate Divestments and Acquisitions.

These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
