Cord Blood Banking is when the umbilical cord blood is taken after the birth of the child and stored for future use to treat diseases of the blood and immune system. The blood contains hematopoietic stem cells which can only develop into blood cells, unlike embryonic stem cells which can develop into any type of cell.
The American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists encourage public cord banking rather than private banks because of the nature of most of these diseases can not be treated with the individual's own cord blood.
