Cleves teen kicks her Taylor High School football team to victory

CLEVES, Ohio (WKRC) – Winning a game is a moment, but this moment is one that’s extra special because she did it.

On Sept. 29th, 16-year-old Delaney Day kicked a game-winning field goal in overtime to lift her Taylor Yellow Jackets past Finneytown in a high school football game.

“My mind was blanking, I wasn’t thinking about it, just went out there and kicked it,” said Day.

She says she was nervous but her teammate Tyler calmed her down and she nailed the 32-yard kick to win the game.

“The whole team has been supportive,” said Day. “There’s going to be haters out there but they’ve been great, they’ve been awesome.”

A few weeks before hitting the game-winning field goal, Day became the first girl in Taylor High School history to score a point in a football game.

“She busted her butt like the guys did in the summer, working to get better and she has improved vastly from day one until now,” said Taylor Head Coach Mark Miller.

Day is one of a handful of young ladies around the Tri-State playing football with the boys. In Milford, Grace Ertel is the kicker for the Milford High School Eagles. Dayton, Kentucky and Lawrenceburg, Indiana also have girl kickers. Walnut Hills also has a girl playing linebacker.

“I think it’s great. It’s not something you see every day. I know Lawrenceburg has a female kicker and it was kind of neat on week one to have the matchup of the female kickers. If you looked a hundred times you’d see it once and you saw it that Friday night,” said Miller.

Although this is Day’s first year on the football team, she’s no stranger to competition. Day is a member of the golf team and the cheerleading squad.
