Jelly Roll Morton - Dr. Jazz-1926
Dr. Jazz was recorded by Jelly Roll Morton and His Red Hot Peppers for Victor Records on December 16, 1926, recorded at a session in the Webster Hotel, ChicagoThe Red Hot Peppers were composed of Morton leading on the piano and vocals, Kid Ory, Andrew Hilaire, John Lindsay, Omer Simeon, Johnny St. Cyr, and George Mitchell. The music is listed as being composed by Walter Melrose and King Oliver. Oliver was actually the sole composer with Melrose, owner of Melrose Publishing, adding his name as he had a hand in changing the arrangement to suit Morton's playing style. This widely distributed 78 was sold in Europe under the Gramophone labels (ALS5018~Norway), (HN2933~Italy), (JK2767~Switzerland), (K8741~France), (B9948~UK), and in Australia (EA3632), and Japan (41465), Sold in Germany as Electrola label EG7907 which is the audio presented here. The flip side of all of the Gramophone releases was Morton's "Original Jelly Roll". Released in the US as Victor 20415 wiith the flip side being Memphis Shake by the Dixieland Jug Blowers.
