Brock can be tricky if you choose Charmander as your starter. Bulbasaur and Squirtle have no issues with defeating both of Brock’s rock pokemon.

Catching a Butterfree or Mankey can be useful here if Charmander is your starter. Once you have defeated Brock and get your boulder badge, head over to the east of Pewter City and you will see Professor Oak’s assistant.
