How to Hang a Heavy Shelf on a Brick Wall

My little sister's husband contacted me before Christmas to say they had bought a heavy shelf and wanted to fix it above their bed but were worried about how to put it up securely as they didn't want it coming down on top of them!

I initially sent him a few notes on WhatsApp, showing him the sort of fixings I would recommend, together with an explanation of how to use them. You can see the image of what I sent him in the video:

Option 1
Rawl Plug F8 x 100mm, requiring an 8mm drill bit

Option 2
Fischer UX 8, with 70 x 6mm screw, also requiring an 8mm drill bit

Option 3
Brown wall plug 42x 7mm, with 60 x 5mm screw

I went on to say that for total peace of mind I would go for Option 1, which was particularly good because the screw head was so large, which was good considering the design of the shelf brackets. I pointed out that drilling the right hole size is crucial as otherwise you can crack the wall or snap the screw. Option 2 would probably also work.

In the end, I was able to drop by at their house before Christmas and do the job myself - and I did in the end go for option 2!
