Interview with Professor Margaret Archer on "The Relational Subject" (2016)
Dr. Timothy Rutzou (Yale University) interviews Professor Margaret Archer (Centre for Social Ontology) her recent book with Pierpaolo Donati, The Relational Subject (Cambridge University Press), which was awarded the Cheryl Frank Memorial Prize 2015.
In their recent work, The Relational Subject, Archer and Donati adopt a different approach to relationality. This approach is characterized by the understanding that relationality itself is understood and taken as an emergent property, which has causal effects both upon its participants and others. Rather than conceptualizing the ‘we’ as being dependent on the notion of shared intentionality, they move the focus away from ‘we think’ and argue that ‘we-ness’ derives from the subjects reflexive orientations towards the emergent relational goods and evils they generate.
