Nutella was never Supposed to Exist

Long before Nutella became the creamy spread loved worldwide, it existed because chocolate was nearly impossible to find. In post-World War II Italy during the 1940s, cocoa was scarce, sugar was rationed, and demand for sweets kept rising, pushing Italian pastry maker Pietro Ferrero to create an alternative using hazelnuts and a small amount of cocoa. The first version wasn’t even a spread—it was a solid block called “Giandujot” that people sliced onto bread, which later evolved into a smoother product known as “Supercrema” before eventually becoming Nutella. What makes this story stand out is that it didn’t win by having more—it won by making less feel premium, turning a simple workaround into a global obsession.
