Twig Stove Review: Cooking a Brook Trout and Boil Test

I recently purchased the Uberleben Stoker Flatpack Bushcraft Stove and I wanted to test its capabilities before it earns a spot in my Boundary Waters kit. I took this twig stove into the BWCA on a day trip to put it to the test. I needed to see how fast it would boil a half liter of water and how well it would cook a few brook trout fillets.

I generally travel pretty fast and light, but don't like to sacrifice when it comes to camp meals. I need a lightweight and versatile stove that can not only boil water efficiently, but cook a proper backcountry meal. I have a lot of fish dinners on my canoe trips, so I want a stove that is easy and convenient to use.

Twig stoves have always interested me as they eliminate the need to carry canister fuel or liquid gas. Everywhere I travel will have easy access to ample kindling, which is all this stove requires. Unless trees stop growing in the woods, I will never run out of a reliable fuel source for this stove.

While the stove is a little heavy at 14oz compared to my canister fuel stove (MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe) at 2.9oz, that weight difference is more than made up for considering you do not have to carry fuel with a twig stove. For a weeklong trip, I generally bring one 16oz and one 8oz canister to allow for coffee and 1-2 hot meals per day. As a precaution, I generally bring more fuel than I need, and almost always have to carry the excess weight out with me, not to mention even when the canisters are empty they still occupy the same amount of space in my pack.

When you factor in fuel, the twig stove easily saves about a pound of weight in my pack over even the lightest weight canister stove.
