Sonia Pottinger interview [UNCUT]

Jamaica’s most successful female producer, Sonia Pottinger was responsible for some of the finest vocal performances ever committed to vinyl. In this 1995 interview the charming but formidable “Miss P” recalls with affection the many outstanding musicians she worked with: “they had love…they shared”. The secret to her recordings? “The joyful spirit in the studio”. It was her “maternal instinct”, she believes, that enabled her to work so successfully with female artists like Judy Mowatt and Marcia Griffiths. She emphasizes (and regrets the loss of) the “learning process” in the recording studio, reveals her love of drums, explains the art of getting radio play, the evolution of dub, and finally, expresses considerable pride in becoming the first woman to record gospel music. Steve Barrow asks the questions and Don Letts keeps the subject in focus.
