Hello. I’m Ron Gidwitz, the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium.
I want to take a minute to share some thoughts during these unprecedented times, speaking from my home, to you in your home.
First, a word of thanks to all of you who are working hard to keep us safe. From law enforcement, to those keeping our food stores and pharmacies open, and especially the healthcare workers, who are putting themselves at risk to save others. We’re grateful for what you do.
I’ve been so impressed with how Belgians have rallied against this threat that knows no boundaries.
I’m inspired by the home-made banners draped from windows and balconies urging people to stay strong and expressing thanks to caregivers.
We all need to stay strong in the fight against this virus and that includes helping one another.
At the U.S. Embassy, we are following the guidelines of your government, and teleworking as much as possible.
At the same time, our Embassy remains operational. We continue to work on our key priorities, from supporting American citizens to engaging with the Belgian government, and with you, the public, through our social media channels.
This is a serious situation and we are facing it together, united in a common purpose, Americans and Belgians standing shoulder to shoulder -- keeping social distancing in mind, of course.
The relationship between our two countries is a special one – based on shared values and sacrifice. It’s in the “heat of the battle,” such as we are today, that we truly feel the depth of our bond.
Representing the United States in Belgium is the highlight of my professional career. I can't wait to get back out there and meet more of you, and visit more of your beautiful country, but our priority right now is making sure that everyone stays safe and healthy.
Thank you for being such gracious hosts to me, my wife Christina, and all the American diplomats stationed here in Belgium.
We’re all in this together.
A bientot, Tot Ziens.
