Penguins are flightless birds belonging to the family Spheniscidae. World-wide there are 17 species of penguin, all of which breed in the Southern hemisphere. ... Penguins differ from birds which are able to fly, by having a much heavier and more robust skeleton.

Penguin habitats include oceans and coasts. They generally live on islands and remote continental regions with few land predators, where their inability to fly is not detrimental to their survival. They are adapted to living at sea, and some species can spend months at a time at sea.
Penguins eat krill, squids, and fishes. Their diet varies slightly on the species of penguins, which have slightly different food preferences. This reduces competition among species.

Overfishing, invasive species and climate change pose major threats to penguins around the world. They say to dress for the job you want, not the job you have. If penguins' black and white getup is anything to go by, these birds would rather be butlers.

Penguins living in cold climates stay warm thanks to their thick feathers and blubber under the skin. Feathers are great on land, but not much help for keeping warm in the cold ocean. This is where the blubber layer comes in. Penguins stand up and rock backwards on their heels to reduce contact with the cold snow.

Predators. A healthy adult penguin on land has no natural predators, though eggs and chicks are eaten by other birds (skuas and giant petrels). Penguins usually live in places free of land predators, against which they would be defenceless. However, in water, penguins are hunted by leopard seals and killer whales.
