🪦 Did you know George Washington wasn’t originally buried in this Tomb?

When he passed away in 1799, Washington was laid to rest in the Old Tomb on his Mount Vernon estate. However, in his will, he called for a new, more secure Tomb to be built. In 1831, the long-held desire was ultimately fulfilled when both George and Martha Washington were moved to the New Tomb, as it is known today.

Their marble sarcophagi were crafted by John Struthers of Philadelphia, who adorned them with powerful national symbols: an eagle, a shield, and a U.S. flag—timeless tributes to a man who helped shape a nation.
