Sony FX3 in-depth review and comparison vs the FX6 & A7SIII

Wedged between Sony's A7Siii and FX6, the Sony FX3 promises the best of mirrorless portability and cinema functionality. Let's see how it performs when held up to its siblings.

Note from 01:36 of the video: At the time I recorded this video the BMPCC 6K Pro had yet to be released. While it solves many of the critiques, it doesn't solve all of them. The wider body of the BM cameras are not everyone's favourite and can cause of gimbal compatibility issues. While the new screen does articulate on the 6K Pro, it doesn't swing out - so it prevents it from being a good vlogging product without a 2nd monitor. As for the Sigma FP, until the release an updated version - the current version is considerably under-powered compared to the FX3 or the A7SIII, but the design is certainly appealing.

Note from 09:45 of the video (codecs): The XAVC MXF wrapper wraps the video (compressed as XAVC I = Intra 422 10 bit or L = long GOP 420 8 bit) 8 ch audio and metadata in a single stream – there is only the one video codec on the FX6 which is an advanced MP4 derivative

XAVC-S (FX3/A7S3) uses the MP4 wrapper and you can choose 3 types of codecs either the XAVC -S Intra or Long or XAVC-HS (HEVC based) codec and separately records now up to 4 channels of audio (some NLE’s have trouble with 4 as originally XAVC-s only had 2 CH) and the metadata all in separate files using an MP4 file wrapper extension

XAVC-HS HEVC is always Long GOP but can be either 10 Bit 422 or 10 bit 420 it can produce better quality images at lower bit rates comparatively but is much more difficult to edit – depends how optimized your NLE and computer CPU& GPU is.
