V Legends (Roni Size, Krust, Die, Dillinja, Lemon D) | Mix by Soul On 10

From 2020 to 2023, V Recordings issued 9 12"s of previously unreleased material as the V Legends series. These tunes were vinyl-only until 2025, when V compiled them, and other unreleased tunes from Roni Size and Dillinja, on a USB stick. This is a DJ mix of all tunes on said stick.

I approached this mix as a personal challenge, since the tunes are quite a mixed bag. They range from 156 to 180(!) BPM, and don't have much in common other than having been dubplates for Bryan Gee at some point. (Speaking of which, while the USB stick may seem expensive, the cost is comparable to cutting a single dubplate back in the day.) I think I did a decent job making lemonade out of Lemon D (sorry not sorry), but you be the judge.

These tunes present mostly as outtakes from released, known tunes. The Lemon D tunes sample American hip-hop and are likely contemporaneous with "This Is L.A." and "Down with the Lites". The Dillinja tunes span early jungle to his later light-hearted work; the previously-unreleased-in-any-form "State of Soul" is genuinely cool, while "Valve Sound VIP" is an odd choice for a label to shout out another one. "Warhead" and Coded Language synths are evident in the Krust tunes. Die offers some cleanly chopped rollers, while Roni Size's tracks recall both his Planet V material and 00s Full Cycle.

Whlie these tunes went unreleased for a reason (except maybe Lemon D's, they're up there with his actual V releases), they still beat much of what's released today. They came from a time when tunes were often wacky or unique, and, warts and all, these tunes strongly bear their makers' personalities. This vault material doesn't compete with so much as complement the classics.
