Bryan Kohberger Faces Death Penalty in Idaho Student Murders

Bryan Kohberger, a criminology graduate student at Washington State University, was arrested in December 2022 and charged with the murders of four University of Idaho students in Moscow, Idaho.

The victims—Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, and Xana Kernodle—were found stabbed to death in an off-campus residence on November 13, 2022.

According to court filings, investigators linked Kohberger to the scene through DNA recovered from a knife sheath discovered next to one of the victims. Law enforcement also cited cellphone records that allegedly showed Kohberger’s phone near the residence multiple times prior to the killings.

Authorities arrested Kohberger at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania after weeks of investigation involving the Moscow Police Department, Idaho State Police, and the FBI.

He was extradited to Idaho and formally charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary.

Kohberger has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors have announced they will pursue the death penalty if he is convicted.

The case remains in the pre-trial phase as the court reviews evidence and legal motions.
