STATHERN: Melton Parish #8 of 26

STATHERN – Landing Place

Stathern sits in the heart of the Vale of Belvoir, a landscape of rolling fields, wooded slopes, and big skies that make the village feel both peaceful and dramatic. Today it is a thriving parish of around 728 residents, but its story stretches back more than a thousand years.

The name Stathern is thought to come from Old Norse and Old English roots, often interpreted as meaning “staithe or landing place” combined with “house” or “dwelling.” This hints at a Viking influence in the region and there are clues for that.

The village’s position near ancient trackways suggests it was a useful stopping point long before written records began. By the time of the Domesday Book, Stathern was already an established settlement. The Domesday entry is brief though

Through the medieval period, Stathern developed under a series of manorial lords, with landownership shifting between local gentry, religious institutions, and later private families. One of the most striking landmarks in the parish is St Guthlac’s Church

Its dedication is unusual — St Guthlac was a 7th or 8th‑century Lincolnshire hermit‑saint — and the church’s tower rises above the village like a beacon. Restored in 1867 and 1868, it remains the spiritual and architectural heart of Stathern.

Stathern’s long history is also reflected in its village layout. The main street once hosted butchers, a hosiery factory, a slaughterhouse, and a bustling post office. These buildings tell the story of a village that has always adapted to changing times while keeping its rural character.

The village’s pubs have played a major role in its social life. The Red Lion Inn, now closed, was once the beating heart of Stathern. Even in its absence, the Red Lion remains a beloved part of this village’s identity. Today, the Plough Inn carries on the tradition of hospitality.

Stathern also boasts a primary school with roots stretching back to 1845, making it one of the oldest educational institutions in the Vale. Otherwise the village is full of charming corners and historic cottages. Walking through the village feels like stepping into a living history book.

Stathern has also been home to notable figures. One of the most celebrated is Major John Crosby Warren MC, a decorated soldier whose bravery and service are recorded in detail by Stathern Heritage.

From its Viking‑influenced name to its medieval church, from its Victorian school to its modern community spirit, the parish feels both ancient and alive. Visitors arrive to find a place that has a thousand years worth of stories to tell. Lets tell some of them today
