WHAT IS RECURRENT ADENOID//POST ADENOIDECTOMY

Recurrence of adenoid after adenoidectomy refers to the regrowth of adenoid tissue in the nasopharynx after it has been surgically removed, leading to return of symptoms such as nasal obstruction, mouth breathing, snoring, or recurrent infections.

Key Points in Definition:
• Recurrence means clinically significant regrowth, not just residual tissue.
• It is often defined radiologically or endoscopically as adenoid tissue occupying more than 40% of the nasopharyngeal space (as per standard criteria).
• Symptoms must also reappear or persist after an initial period of improvement following surgery.

Clinical Criteria for Recurrence:
• Tissue regrowth visible on nasoendoscopy or X-ray (e.g., lateral nasopharyngeal soft tissue X-ray).
• Obstruction of more than 40% of nasopharynx.
• Return of symptoms like nasal obstruction, snoring, or mouth breathing.

Common Causes:
• Incomplete removal (especially with curettage).
• Younger age at initial surgery.
• Allergic rhinitis or chronic infections stimulating lymphoid hyperplasia.
