I doodled Charlotte w/ the intentions of finishing/recording it, but I liked the sketch 2 much, so I did Penny as well!

in the months immediately after the boat incident, penny still hadn’t realized that she had been groomed, and insisted that she made the choice herself and hated charlotte for interfering because she felt like her mom still didn’t take her seriously or see her as her own person. the remainder of her senior year was constant fighting with her mom that surprisingly, kyle was mostly in the dark for. charlotte was so ashamed and furious with herself over what happened that she didn’t even want to tell her husband, but penny interprets this as charlotte being ashamed of her. the lack of communication causes strain on charlotte and kyle’s marriage and by the time penny graduates (choosing a college in ohio because of its distance from her family), the family is kind of falling apart.

penny heads off to college. she started having panic attacks in the months leading up to her departure, and she mistakenly attributes them to her family situation and not to bojack. college life is good for her because it allows her to work on her own independence and sense of self, but other than that, it’s surprisingly uneventful, save for basic college struggles. she starts to look at her high school self with embarassment, and half-laughs, half-cringes at how much of a stupid teenage girl she was. embarassing, yeah, but she’s moved on. so why haven’t the panic attacks stopped? she’s away from her family, but it feels like they’re getting worse, and she’s sure as hell not going to call her mom about it.

when she goes home between semesters, she brings it up casually, and charlotte immediately starts asking questions and prying and being a mom. it becomes a fight, but not a full-on fight. when penny snaps at her, charlotte agrees to drop it. penny goes back to oberlin feeling... weird. like she’s in denial about something.

charlotte finally, finally breaks down and tells kyle what happened that night. everything. how bojack kissed her, how penny was on the boat, how it was her fault, how she was so stupid not to see what bojack was doing. he did it right under her nose, the mentoring, taking her to her prom, how did she see nothing wrong with him taking her to prom! nothing happened, and yet... he took penny from her. he took a piece of her little girl, of her family, that they will never get back because penny hates her. and there is no one charlotte can blame for that but herself.

penny works her way through college. her grades are fine, her friends are great, but she’s still having panic attacks, sometimes over nothing at all. she’s googled a bunch of techniques for dealing with them, and she leans on her friends of course, but they’re still there, still slowly getting worse and worse. for the first time, she calls her mom. just to say hi. not because anything’s wrong. she doesn’t even know why she’s calling, really. it’s dumb. it’s whatever. charlotte notices, though. when they say goodbye, she leans back against the fridge, slides to the ground, and sits there with her head in her hands because she doesn’t dare to laugh or smile or hope. and she sure as hell hasn’t earned the right to cry.

and then senior year happens. bojack shows up at oberlin. penny runs back to her dorm. she tries to vomit into the toilet but nothing comes up.

for once, there is nothing to protect her from what happened. she can’t deny it anymore or laugh it off as teen angst. he preyed on her.

she calls her mom and cries and cries and cries. charlotte eventually gives up trying to ask what’s wrong and let’s her cry. penny falls asleep in the bathroom to the sound of her mother’s breathing. the call is five hours long before one or both batteries die. about three hours in, there is snoring and what might be a muffled sob. kyle finds charlotte asleep at the kitchen table the next morning with her phone between her ear and the table. penny’s roommate finds her curled up by the toilet, her phone in one hand and the triangular pendant of her necklace in the other. a gift from her mother that she could never be angry enough to take off.

penny calls her mom more often. at first it’s once every couple of weeks, then every friday, and then two or three times a week, just to talk. the first time penny says “i love you”, charlotte is too shocked to respond. penny is hanging up when she blurts out “i love you too. i love you so much”. penny, her voice now tight and breathy, replies “thanks, mom”.
