How to Make a Polyptych into One Large Abstract Painting - Part Two

This BobBlast is Part Two of last week's BobBlast - How Four Small Abstract Warm Up Paintings can Make One Large Polyptych Painting!

Continuing on from the last BobBlast, I was demonstrating how I work on abstract painting warm ups. I use only four colors chosen from my Goof-Proof Color Wheel.

Starting with Blue as the Dominant color and a paper towel, I slathered all four watercolor sheets with different values and tones of Blue. The Focal color is a small splash of Yellow. The two Spice Colors are Red and Green, placed near the Yellow Focal point.

Well, at the end of that demo, I liked where the painting was going. So in this Part Two - I am continuing on with developing it in a refined direction, quietly and with emphasis on IMPROVISATION. The colors are the same, but more "dialed back" - using neutrals with a visual surprise to stop me… so I will look longer.

Before starting, I rearranged the four watercolor sheets to read as one larger square painting as best I could - like a puzzle, I looked for possibilities of a grander design and newness.

Again, I start by reestablishing the dominant Blue. Next, I determine only one focal Yellow color. The most focal when all four sheets read as one. At this time, I lightly add the two Spice colors, Red and Green.

I'm sensing a fresh painting direction I'd like to explore… little paintngs arranged to form a much larger one. A polyptych - Four or more.
