Book Building I A conversation between Dayanita Singh, Monte Packham and Gerhard Steidl

The book is well known as Dayanita Singh’s primary medium, one she explores to create new relationships between photography, publishing, the exhibition and the museum. But where did her passion for the book as the ideal vessel for her photos, for the stories she tells, begin? The answer lies in Zakir Hussain, a handmade maquette Dayanita crafted in 1986 as her first project as a graphic design student. in October 2019 she came to Göttingen with the idea of making a facsimile of that maquette. But as often happens, things changed and grew: she ended up leaving with a book object housing not only the maquette, but also a reader and poster.

This conversation between Dayanita, Gerhard Steidl and Monte Packham provides an insight into the thought processes behind such an ambitious project and explores the endless possibilities of building a book.
