DIY: How to Test an Armature of a Motor
Video tutorial on how to test an armature of a motor. Here I am working with an armature from a starter motor I am rebuilding for a vehicle. This procedure can be applied to other armatures found on starter motors for small engines, power tools, household appliances, fans, etc. There are three test which can be done to determine if there is a fault in the armature which would result in it not functioning correctly or not working completely. This particular armature is from a 1998 Ford Ranger.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-multimeter
-armature
Procedure:
-set the multimeter in the lowest ohms range
-touch test probes to determine existing resistance in the leads
-research specific specifications for your armature
-resistance reading will vary between armature designs
Test #1
-doing a continuity test between each of the individual bars and the armature shaft which is ground
-we want no continuity between each of the points, otherwise that will indicate there is a failure in insulation resulting in a short
-hold the one test probe on the bar of the commutator, then hold the other on the shaft and take the reading
-no reading should register on the multimeter, otherwise that will indicate there is a short
Test #2
-bar to bar test on the commutator to determine the resistance
-touch the one probe on one bar, then the other probe on the adjacent bar
-then take note of the reading on the meter
-continue this for each of the bars all the way around the commutator
-initially we do not a large fluctuation between values
Test #3
-testing the bars in the commutator, but is based on testing the bars directly across from each other or 180 degrees
-this will determine the condition of the windings
-touch the test probe on one bar and then the other probe on the bar directly across from the first one
-take note of the reading
-initially we do not a large fluctuation between values
