When will you marry?

‘When will you marry?’ is the question that many single women have come to dread at family functions. We ask because we care but how often do we stop to think about the pain our well-meaning questions can cause?

Marriage is not a sprint to the altar; it is a marathon for life. My heart bleeds for the countless women who are under so much pressure from society to just get married regardless; women who are made to feel they are not respectable unless they are married.

I am a 100% proponent on marriage; I teach on it everyday. I live it; I love it! But singleness is not a disease. It is also a blessed state in which we can find God’s purpose if we keep our eyes on Him.

I admit some Christian women are chronically afraid of commitment but most are not. They are just looking for a godly man who can lead the family well and love them faithfully. I have counselled far too many godly women who were told that they were ‘too choosy; pressured into ‘settling’ for the next available man ignoring all the warning signals in the relationship.

Now they are doing damage control, trying to salvage their sanity and self-esteem because the man they ‘settled’ for is ungodly, wedded to infidelity, violent or simply doesn’t value them. They look around and the people who pressured them to ‘settle’ are nowhere to be found to help them pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.

I am under no illusions, singleness can be very challenging. Nevertheless, the pain of a difficult marriage is infinitely worse. Let’s support our singles with prayer and give them breathing space to follow their godly convictions until love finds them. Marriage is not a badge of honour; it is a place of deep responsibility.
