Kim Taipale, Executive Director of the Stilwell Center for Advanced Studies in Science and Technology policy, is joined by
Arun Sundararajan, NYU Stern Professor and author of the upcoming book The Sharing Economy, and
Andrew McAfee, Co-Director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy and author of The Second Machine Age.
This panel, discusses current technological innovation and economic disruption in the United States and the concern many Americans have because of the changes we are facing to our economic system.
Professor McAfee posits that the increase of productivity and GDP per capita since the turn of the century, and how this phenomenon is a positive indicator for the future of our economy. He criticized our fears by stating, “The era where there are no more jobs is not right around the corner.”
Professor Sundararajan added to the discussion by explaining how crowd-based platforms like AirBnB, Uber, and Etsy are benefitting the economy. According to Sundararajan,“The promising thing about the shared economy is that it’s extending the effect of digital technology to other real world services so the sharing economy platform will sort of create greater access to mobility, create greater access to healthcare, they will create greater access to education.”
