Rio de Janeiro 1977 archive footage

Archival footage shot by an Austrian filmmaker while visiting Brazil in 1977.

It contains stock footage of Rio de Janeiro:

(00:00 - 00:50) begins at Praia do Flamengo avenue, then goes thru Aterro do Flamengo, crosses Túnel do Pasmado (There is another tunnel to be crossed before reaching to Copacabana—it's the Túnel Novo, that doesn't appear in the footage) and reaches Copacabana
(00:51 - 04:48) Ipanema Beach and Vieira Souto Avenue. In the sequence, several daily scenes on Praça General Osório, one of the two main squares in Ipanema, and where many craftsmen show and sell their art.
(04:49 - 05:36) Ipanema Beach
(05:37 - 06:49) scenes taken from a hotel or apartment room in the Catete neighborhood (Although Catete is considered South Zone. There are no beaches there, but Flamengo Beach can be reached on foot by a 10 minute journey. Nevertheless, Flamengo Beach is a polluted one and is not recommended for sun bathing. There are a lot of hotels in Catete, and they are cheaper than those of Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. That's why many tourists prefer them. At 06:03 you can see the name of one of those hotels: "Hotel Ferreira Viana".)
(06:50 - 07:08) Praia do Flamengo; a woman coming from the beach (Until the fifties, Flamengo had only the beach and was not polluted yet. Then an enormous landfill was made, and Aterro do Flamengo was born in the sixties. It's a 1,2 million square meter park, and many people go there not because of the beach, but to scroll in the park, although the beach already exists and some mad people bathe in it.)
(07:09 - 11:59) Metropolitan Cathedral, Igreja da Glória (Glória Church, built in 1739), aerial cable car to the top of Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf), views and scenes from above (at 08:07, Enseada de Botafogo (Botafogo Cove) with its polluted beach; at 08:21, the polluted Flamengo Beach; at 08:28, front view of the Santos Dumont Airport runways; at 08:30, partial view of the Ponte Rio-Niterói (Rio-Niterói Bridge; at 08:33, Niterói city in the far, across Guanabara Bay; at 09:24, Flamengo Beach; at 09:27, cars running on Aterro do Flamengo; at 09:45, the building near the bottom left corner is Santa Cruz Fortress, one of the several fortresses built to protect Rio from invasions; at 09:59, Praia Vermelha, a very dangerous beach because of the ocean currents)
(12:00 - 12:29) end of the Pão de Açúcar tour and return to the hotel (at 12:11, Praça General Tibúrcio, where the aerial cable car begins its climb to Pão de Açúcar; Curiosity: at 12:32 a white —although it seems yellowish in the footage — and red bus numbered 48005 is seen; it is a 415 - Usina x Leblon line)
(12:30 - 13:12) another tour beginning (from 12:46 on, bus transit on Praia de Botafogo)
(13:13 - 13:50) tour to Santa Teresa neighborhood and climbing to Corcovado (Santa Teresa was a very interesting place to visit, but nowadays it's too dangerous to go there. At 13:29 is one of the Santa Teresa trams; they were refurbished and are a bit different today from that shown in the footage.)
(13:51 : 16:50) several views from atop Corcovado
(16:53 :18:29) view of Ipanema and Leblon Beaches, taken from the end of this beach; in the sequence, Copacabana.
(18:30 - 23:43) another tour, this time to Cinelândia, Avenida Rio Branco, the main commercial street in Rio, and surroundings
(23:44 - 24:50) Copacabana
(24:51 - 25:13) visit to Monumento aos Mortos na II Guerra Mundial (Monument to the Deceased of World War II) on Aterro do Flamengo
(25:14 - 25:18) Igreja da Glória and Metropolitan Cathedral
(25:25 - 28:33) a trip on the Santa Teresa tram (from 25:47 until 26:00, view from atop the Lapa Acqueduct)
(28:34 - 32:24) tour to Niterói City, across Guanabara Bay, a 20 minute journey by ferry. At 30:20, view of Ponte Rio-Niterói far awayl at 31:45, building at Ilha Fiscal (Fiscal Island), an important historical place to Rio and to Brazil (Inside that building the last ball of the Brazilian Empire took place on November 9th, 1889. Six days after, Brazil turned into a republic.)
(32:25 - 39:46) miscellaneous views, mainly from Copacabana Beach (Here and there, one can see fishermen pulling nets from the sea.)
(39:47) Igreja de Santa Luzia (Santa Luzia Church), built in 1752 (Formerly, it was in front of the sea, but in the thirties a nearby hill was demolished and some landfills were made, including surrounding the church. In the sixties, another landfill was made. Nowadays, the church is some 400 meters away from the sea.)
