Starting Dahlias Indoors in 45 Seconds | Ziplock Bag Method (Beginner Guide)
How I start my dahlia tubers in ziplock bags (as a beginner) 🌸
I’ve been seeing this method everywhere, so a few weeks ago I thought I’d give it a go and I love it. Being able to actually see what’s happening takes all the guesswork out of it.
Before I even started, I tidied up my tubers (cutting off any old roots and broken neck tubers) so I was only working with healthy parts.
What you need:
- Dahlia tubers
- Ziplock bags (I’m using mostly recycled ones ♻️ but the one in this video was a new one)
- A marker pen to label each bag (unless you don’t mind guessing 😅)
- A small amount of compost per tuber (not too wet as dahlias hate soggy soil)
- A warm spot indoors, ideally near a window (mine are south-facing)
How I do it:
I label my bags first and fold half of it down around the outside as you don’t want to be sealing the bags.
Then I place each tuber into a bag with a small amount of compost at the bottom, just slightly damp (not soaking wet, just enough to encourage growth). I then cover the tuber with compost and lightly compact it.
They stay indoors somewhere warm, but on sunny days I bring them outside.
The best part?
You can actually see:
- Root growth
- New shoots forming
- Any signs of rot early on (thankfully I haven’t had any yet)
- Which tubers just aren’t doing anything (I have two that are questionable)
- How much moisture is in the bags (so you know when to water)
As a beginner, that’s been a game changer, and so far I’ve got over 30 really healthy tubers sprouting!!
I’ll be documenting how these progress over the next few weeks, so save this if you’re growing dahlias this year! 🌺
