Kathleen Long plays Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.5 BWV 1050
A December 9, 1947 Decca recording of the Bach Brandenburg Concerto No.5 BWV 1050 featuring Kathleen Long as pianist, together with Frederick Grinke on violin, Gareth Morris on flute, and The Boyd Neel String Orchestra led by Boyd Neel.
I'd not heard this recording before finding the different segments of the 78 set in an online archive. I've been a fan of Long (no relation to French pianist Marguerite Long) for some time and have lamented how few of her recordings have been reissued, and this is certainly one worth hearing.
The performance is superb, with wonderful synergy amongst the musicians, with light clear textures and marvellous fluidity and momentum. I think I've managed the side joins quite imperceptibly, though in one case the tempo is markedly different at the start of one record than what preceded at the end of the previous disc. Nonetheless, a charming and vivacious account of Bach's masterpiece.
