Will this streaming box revolutionize ... anything? | AT&T streaming box review

AT&T REALLY wants to define the future of streaming TV THEIR way. This box is part of that plan. So … how’s it going so far? Today I'll go over my initial thoughts from a weekend of beta testing AT&T's new streaming box, which they're calling the "Osprey".

----------

THE FACTS

- Reports of “AT&T TV” soft-launching in August.
- Not sure yet about price on the box
- Meant to replace cable box, so will they charge monthly? Hope not.
- Runs on Android. Chromecast built-in.

WHAT I LIKE

- The keyboard mechanism is awful
- Fortunately, it runs on Android, so my Netflix account was already logged into. Didn’t have to use it as much as I feared.
- New Osprey remote brings back the volume/channel toggles. You might like this
- TBH, I never once used the channel one. Especially with the lag.
- Google Assistant button is prominent

WHAT I DISLIKE

- It’s so slow. The lag time on button inputs is frankly unacceptable.
- The keyboard is AWFUL. Something about the flat remote, requiring HARD presses, plus the non-qwerty layout.
- Also, after Apple TV’s dictation feature, how is this not the norm?
- DIRECTV NOW (eventually AT&T TV) is effectively your home screen.

Final thoughts
- This isn’t exactly a replacement for other streaming boxes, it’s more of a replacement for your cable box.
- Makes sense, streaming through something like this will save AT&T LOTS of $$$ (no more installation!)
- As such, it will need MORE POWER.

Our thanks to AT&T for providing the box for our beta test.
