Fiat Abarth 2000 Sport Tipo SE010 (1968) - 250Hp 2.0-Litre Engine & 575Kg - Great Sound on Track!

I recently saw a splendid example of the 1968 Fiat Abarth 2000 Sport Tipo SE010 at the Varano de' Melegari track. It's one of about 50 cars built, the first 25 to reach the number necessary for group 4 homologation and another 25 later. Incredibly light, weighing only 575 kg, it's formed by a tubular frame with fibreglass bodywork and the typical aerodynamic shape of sports prototypes. Mechanically it's also a jewel, with the engine placed overhanging in the rear area; it's a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, 16-valve engine with two overhead camshafts and powered by a pair of Weber 58 DCO3 twin-choke carburettors. This engine can develop 250Hp at 8,700 rpm and is powered by a five-speed gearbox plus reverse. The suspensions are at the front with oscillating trapezoids, stabilizer bars, coil springs and telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers. At the rear, we find swing arms, stabilizer bars, coil springs and telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers. From a competitive point of view, the model was successful right from the start, coming first on April 7, 1968, in France in the Hillclimb race of the Ampus. Subsequently victorious also in the Italian Hillclimb race Stallavena-Boscochiesanuova and many other European races. But not only. Also built for endurance races (it adopts a huge 100-litre tank), on 4 September 1968, the Abarth Racing Team took part in the 500 km Nürburgring with three cars equipped with a 1.6-litre engine. The success will be tremendous with the conquest of the entire podium. Pilots Peter Schetty, Johannes Ortner and Arturo Merzario will finish first, second and third, respectively. Enjoy! 😉

Recentemente ho avuto il piacere di vedere in pista a Varano de' Melegari uno splendido esemplare di Fiat Abarth 2000 Sport Tipo SE010 del 1968. Si tratta di una delle circa 50 vetture costruite, le prime 25 per raggiungere il numero necessario all'omologazione gruppo 4 ed altre 25 successivamente. Estremamente leggera, solo 575 Kg di peso è formata da un telaio tubolare con carrozzeria in vetroresina e la tipica forma aerodinamica delle sport prototipo. Anche meccanicamente è un gioiello, con il motore collocato a sbalzo nella zona posteriore, si tratta di 2.0-Litri, 4 cilindri 16 valvole, due alberi a camme in testa ed alimentato da un paio di carburatori doppio corpo Weber 58 DCO3. Questo propulsore è in grado di sviluppare 250Hp ad 8.700 giri/min ed è mosso da un cambio a cinque rapporti più retromarcia. Le sospensioni sono all’avantreno con trapezi oscillanti, barra stabilizzatrice, molle elicoidali e ammortizzatori idraulici telescopici. Al posteriore troviamo bracci oscillanti, barra stabilizzatrice, molle elicoidali e ammortizzatori idraulici telescopici. Agonisticamente il modello è competitivo e vincente già all'esordio giungendo primo il 7 aprile 1968 in Francia, nella corsa in salita dell’Ampus. Successivamente vittoriosa anche alla cronoscalata italiana Stallavena-Boscochiesanuova e da qui in avanti in altre tantissime gare in salita. Ma non solo. Costruita anche per le gare di durata (adotta un enorme serbatoio da 100 litri) il 4 Settembre 1968 la Squadra Corse Abarth partecipa alla 500 chilometri del Nürburgring con tre vetture equipaggiate con un motore da 1.6-Litri. Il successo sarà strepitoso con la conquista dell'intero podio. I piloti Peter Schetty, Johannes Ortner ed Arturo Merzario giungeranno rispettivamente al primo, secondo e terzo posto.
