Kophe Nadiya
A poem I wrote in 2011 and revised in 2015
Kophe Nadiya
There is a coffee shop on Pushkin Street
where I sit and watch young lovers meet
to whisper in their lonely Slavic tones.
There I see Ukraine's light shining
even in the night as they sip
lattes unaware of the extra-
ordinary spirits covered there
with the commonplace. Yet, in their eyes
I see the spark that threatens to ignite.
I hold my breath. Perhaps this night, perhaps
these two; perhaps this shop, the cups, and I
will bear witness: life is more than life
and light is not undone; so the old
and young will transcend and converge.
