Gilgit-Baltistan Elections 2026: Polling Officially Begins as Voters Head to Booths

Gilgit-Baltistan is set for a crucial electoral exercise as voting for the 24-seat Legislative Assembly takes place after a delay of four months caused by severe winter conditions. With 958,480 registered voters, including a significant gender split between 503,772 male and 454,708 female voters, the election is expected to be closely watched across the region. A total of 396 candidates are competing, reflecting a highly competitive political environment dominated by independents, while major parties such as the PPP, PML-N, PTI, and IPP are also actively contesting seats. The participation of only eight female candidates highlights the continuing gender gap in political representation.

Security and administrative arrangements have been tightened to ensure a peaceful and transparent polling process from 8am to 5pm. The Election Commission has empowered district returning officers and returning officers with magistrate-level authority to maintain law and order and enforce the code of conduct strictly. Caretaker officials have urged citizens to come out in large numbers, emphasizing that every vote carries weight in shaping the region’s political future. Authorities and stakeholders alike are stressing free, fair, and credible elections as a foundation for strengthening democratic traditions and ensuring stability and development in Gilgit-Baltistan.
