Draubuta - Navosa

IN August of 2017 The Fiji Times highlighted the plight of the villagers of Draubuta, and how there have been several cases of women giving birth out in the wilderness because they miscalculated the delivery date and back then the nearest health centre was accessible via a trek wich would last an hour to an hour and a half uphill before a two hours long bumpy ride. A few weeks after the story was published government and the Fiji Roads Authority upgraded the road at Draubuta, only to be found out less than two years later that the contractor responsible had not done a good job. Three weeks 28 homes have partially/fully destroyed and villagers forced to evacuate their homes as soil that had been stockpiled on the side of the road have been washed down onto the village . According to the Fiji Roads Authority, “initial report from the village show that it is not a landslide rather the excess material that was left on site had been washed to the village by the continuous heavy rain in the area. The FRA confirmed the Drabutua village is liable to compensation a as result of the work “it is the responsibility of the incumbent contractor to stockpile material in a safe and secured location including sedimentation control system.”
