These leaves is Yemen’s most popular drug. It is estimated that up to 90% of adult males, 70% of woman chew it three to four hours daily in Yemen. Meanwhile, a staggering 15–20% of children under the age of 12 are also daily consumers.

Yemen, a small country on the Arabian Peninsula, has become the site of grievous civilian suffering amid an intractable civil war. The war has caused more than two hundred thousand deaths, mostly from indirect causes such as a lack of food and health services.

Humanitarian groups warn that Yemen is, “being starved” and that famine is imminent.

So, how a nation in a war, which is dangerously short of food, to be growing an inedible narcotic?
